🔌 Function

Protects the sterndrives electrically by impressed current, continuously measuring the drives' potential and adjusting the output so the castings are held out of the corrosion range while the boat sits in the water.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Corrosion or protection warning shown at the EVC display
• Sacrificial back-up anodes wasting far faster than they used to
• Pitting, blistering or white staining on the drive castings
• Reference electrode or anode lead found chafed, corroded or open circuit
• Control unit case water-stained and connector pins green on removal

🛠️ Service Notes

• Confirm the boat is a twin installation and the system is EVC C2 to EVC E before ordering, as the single-installation kit 23025862 is a separate part
• Check the bonding connections and reference electrode first, since a poor earth path makes a healthy unit read as faulty
• No anodes are consumed while the system is active, so heavy back-up anode wastage usually means the system has been off or in monitoring-only mode
• Requirements: a Volvo Penta IPS or an Aquamatic DPI, DPH, DPS, SX, OX, FWD or DPR sterndrive; Electronic Vessel Control generation C2 or later; a 2.5in, 4in or 7in EVC display or Glass Cockpit; and a fibreglass hull
• Twin Aquamatic sterndrive installations are supplied with two back-up anodes
• Extra bonding cable is needed between IPS units on triple and quad installations - one for a triple, two for a quad
• Volvo Penta recommends keeping shore power connected while berthed
• Below 75% battery state of charge with no shore power the system enters a monitor-only mode: status is still visible at the helm but protection comes from the back-up sacrificial anodes
• Below 50% battery state of charge the system is inactive and protection comes entirely from the back-up anodes
• Typical consumption is under 350 mA for a triple IPS1/10 installation with unpainted drives; with painted drives that can fall below 50 mA
• Always follow Volvo Penta's instructions for painting IPS drives, and the legislation governing antifouling paints where the boat is used
