• Fit a new nut wherever the original is a self-locking, nylon-insert or deformed-thread type — the locking feature is single-use and a reused one will not hold
• Clean and inspect the male thread before fitting; run the nut down by hand for most of its travel, and stop and investigate rather than forcing a nut that binds
• Tighten to the figure given in the workshop manual for your engine, using the correct washer and the specified tightening sequence where one applies
• Renew any split pin, tab washer, locking wire or lock washer that goes with the nut, and bend or fit the locking device properly once tightened
• On drive and underwater assemblies, keep dissimilar metals apart where the design intends it and refit any anti-corrosion or anti-seize treatment the manual specifies for that joint
