Passes the engine's heat from the closed coolant circuit into the raw water flowing through it, so the coolant returns to the engine cooled.

• Coolant temperature climbing under load, worst in warm water
• Coolant disappearing with no external leak to be found
• An oily film or bubbles in the header tank
• Salt crust or green corrosion staining around the end caps
• The tube stack found blocked with scale, weed or impeller debris on removal

• Renew the end cap O-rings and gaskets whenever the exchanger is opened
• Check the raw water pump impeller and the sacrificial anode where the installation has one - broken impeller vanes end up in the tube stack
• A blocked stack can often be cleaned and pressure tested rather than replaced, so inspect before condemning
