🔌 Function

Encloses the valve gear on top of the cylinder head, keeping the oil in and dirt and water out.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Oil weeping down the side of the head from the cover joint
• Smell of burnt oil, or oil baked onto the exhaust below the cover
• Gasket hardened, flattened or squeezed out of the groove
• Sealing flange distorted, or cracks around the fixing points
• Breather passages in the cover blocked with oily sludge

🛠️ Service Notes

• Renew the cover gasket and any grommets or seals whenever the cover comes off, they do not seat twice
• Tighten the fixings evenly and in stages, pulling one corner down first distorts the flange and causes the next leak
• Clean the breather passages while the cover is off and check for crankcase pressure before blaming the gasket
