• Oil or water weeping from the joint between the housing and the units either side
• Vibration or a rumble that rises with shaft speed
• Corrosion, pitting or exfoliation on the housing casting, especially around the seal bores
• Seal bores or spigot faces worn or ovalled on strip-down
• Water in the drive oil, showing as a grey emulsion on the dipstick

• Renew the seals, O-rings and gaskets that sit against this housing whenever it is removed
• Check the bearing and seal bores for wear and corrosion before refitting - a worn bore will not hold a new seal
• Support the housing on removal; at over 6 kg it will drop as the last fixings come out
