- Belt squeal or a glazed and dusty belt from a seizing pulley

- Check the belt tension, the charging cables and the earth connection before condemning the alternator - a bad earth mimics a failed unit
- Confirm the system is 28 V before ordering, as a 12 V or 14 V machine is not interchangeable
- Renew the drive belt at the same time
