🔌 Function

Switches the heavy starter current on command from the start signal, and at the same time pushes the starter pinion into mesh with the flywheel ring gear.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • A single loud click with no cranking when the key is turned
  • Chattering from the starter as the contacts make and break
  • Starter continuing to run after the key is released
  • Intermittent starting that gets worse when everything is hot
  • Contacts and main terminals found burned or pitted on strip-down

  • Check the battery, the main cables and the earth strap for voltage drop before condemning the solenoid - a click with no crank is often a supply problem
  • Inspect the starter pinion and the flywheel ring gear teeth while the starter is off
