• Oil, coolant or gear oil weeping or dripping from the joint where a shaft leaves its housing
• Loss of oil or coolant level with no external damage and no other obvious source
• A wet, oily film thrown around the surrounding area, or oil tracking along a shaft and flinging off as it turns
• Water or contamination found in the lubricant that the seal is meant to keep it out of

🛠️ Service Notes

• Clean the housing bore and the shaft, and check the shaft for a wear groove where the old seal ran — a new seal on a grooved shaft will leak again
• Fit the seal with the lip and its garter spring facing the fluid being retained, normally inward towards the oil, and to the depth specified for that housing
• Press the seal in square using a driver or plate that bears on the seal's outer face and never on the lip; a cocked or dished seal will leak from new
• Lightly oil or grease the lip and the shaft before assembly unless the manual specifically calls for a dry fit, and protect the lip with tape or oiled paper when passing it over splines, keyways or threads
• Check the garter spring is still seated in its groove after fitting, then turn the assembly by hand before running it up
