Holds the engine's oil reserve below the crankcase, closing off the bottom of the engine and keeping the oil pump pickup submerged.

  • Oil drip or pooling under the engine
  • Oil level falling between services with no smoke to account for it
  • Pan found dented or split from grounding or an impact
  • Sealing flange distorted or the joint face damaged
  • Drain plug thread stripped or weeping

  • Renew the sump joint and the drain plug sealing washer when the pan is refitted
  • Clean the pickup strainer and inspect the drained oil for debris while the access is open
