🔌 Function

Couples two shafts through internal and external splines, transmitting torque while allowing a small amount of misalignment and axial movement.

  • Clunk on gear engagement or when drive is taken up
  • Rattle from the coupling at idle
  • Rotational free play felt at the shaft
  • Spline flanks worn thin, stepped or hooked on inspection
  • Fretting corrosion or reddish dust in the spline

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Measure the wear on the spline flanks rather than the tips - the tips can look sound while the flanks are worn through
  • Check the mating splines on both shafts at the same time, since a worn sleeve rarely leaves them undamaged
  • Grease the splines to the drive's specification on assembly to keep fretting at bay
