• Bleed the system properly: with the engine stopped, turn the helm slowly from lock to lock several times while topping up, then repeat with the engine running until the fluid is free of foam and the level stops dropping
• Flush or renew the hoses and any cooler when the old pump has failed internally; debris carried over from the old unit is the usual reason a replacement fails early
• Check the drive belt and pulley alignment and condition, and set the tension by the procedure in the workshop manual for your engine
• Check the unions and the pump body for leaks after running, recheck the reservoir level once the system has settled, and confirm smooth, even assistance in both directions across the full range of helm movement
