• Clean and inspect the threads in the casting and on the bolt, and check the bolt is the correct length for the hole it goes into — one that bottoms will not clamp, and one that is too short will strip the thread
• Tighten to the torque figure and sequence given in the workshop manual for your engine; where a stretch or angle-tighten procedure is specified the bolt is single-use and must be renewed
• Lubricate or fit dry exactly as the manual states — the same torque figure applied to an oiled thread puts far more load into the bolt than a dry one
• Fit new washers and locking devices, and use the thread locking or sealing compound specified for that joint
• Discard any bolt that is stretched, necked, corroded in the shank or has damaged threads rather than trying to clean it up and reuse it
