🔌 Function

Passes engine oil across a water-cooled core, taking heat out of the oil so its viscosity and film strength hold up under sustained load.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Oil temperature high, or oil pressure low when hot
  • Oil in the coolant, or a creamy emulsion under the filler cap
  • Coolant loss with no external leak to be found
  • Oily film on the water side, showing an internal breach
  • Core furred, blocked or corroded through on strip-down

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Renew the sacrificial anode when the cooler is serviced and set a checking interval once it is back in use - a wasted anode leaves the core to corrode next
  • Pressure-test the core before condemning it, and renew all seals and gaskets on refitting
  • If the core has failed internally, flush the oil and coolant circuits before running the engine again
