⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Single heavy click with no rotation
  • Slow, laboured cranking with a good battery and clean connections
  • Whirring with no engagement, or the pinion staying engaged after firing
  • Grinding at engagement and chipped teeth on the pinion or ring gear
  • Burnt smell and hot casing after repeated attempts

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check battery condition, terminals and the volt drop on the main cables before condemning the motor - most slow cranking is supply, not starter
  • Inspect the flywheel ring gear for chipped teeth while the motor is out, and renew both if the teeth are damaged
  • Support the weight when withdrawing the motor so the pinion nose and mounting face are not damaged
