• A replacement unit has to be configured to the vessel with Volvo Penta's diagnostic system before the installation will run correctly — treat this as dealer work at commissioning rather than a plug-in swap.
• Before condemning the old unit, check the battery connections, the earth points and the multipin connectors; corroded pins and a poor earth produce intermittent faults that read exactly like a failed control unit.
• Isolate the batteries before disconnecting anything, and keep the unit and its connectors dry and clean during the change.
