23778960 Lower Gear | Genuine Volvo Penta Part

🔧 Product Description

Genuine Volvo Penta lower gear, superseding part number 23699403 and covering its five applications.

⚙️ Key Features

• Lower gear from the Marine Propulsion group
• Supersedes 23699403 and covers its five applications
• Handing and ratio are part of the specification, so match it to the drive's own parts list

🔌 Function

Takes drive from the vertical shaft at the bottom of the drive unit and turns it through to the propeller shaft.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Whine or growl from the lower part of the drive that changes with speed
• Bright flakes or a metallic sheen on the drive oil dipstick
• Teeth chipped, pitted or with the hardened surface flaking away
• Backlash felt at the propeller with the drive in gear
• Drive oil milky, showing water has been getting in

🛠️ Service Notes

• Gears run as a matched pair - check the mating gear and the bearings before fitting one new part on its own
• Establish why the old gear failed; water in the drive oil or a failed seal will do the same to the new one
• 23778961 is the other lower gear listed here and replaces a different number, so confirm which one your drive takes
