Keeps oil in and water out at the joint it sits in, taking up the small clearance between the two faces or shafts.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Oil weeping or a sheen on the water around the joint
- Water in the drive oil, seen as a grey emulsion on the dipstick
- Seal lip found hardened, cracked or with a groove worn into it
- Spring dislodged or corroded out of a lip seal
- Seal bore scored or the shaft grooved where the lip ran

- Seals are single-use - never refit one that has been removed
- Check the shaft or bore for a wear groove before fitting; a new seal will not hold on a grooved surface
