🔧 Product Description
Volvo Penta Active Corrosion Protection is an impressed current cathodic protection system for Aquamatic sterndrives and Volvo Penta IPS. It continuously measures the electrical potential of the drive and automatically adjusts the electrical output to hold the drive within safe potential levels, in both salt and brackish water. Because the protection is generated electrically rather than consumed from a block of metal, no anodes are used up while the system is active, and the protection status is shown in the engine displays at the helm.

🔌 Function
Part of the drive's corrosion protection package: on IPS installations the active system takes over from the standard transom mounted sacrificial anodes, and the anode carries the protection when the system is not driving current.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Anode eaten away far more than expected for the hours run
- Anode untouched after a season, which points to a broken bonding path
- Pitting or blistering appearing on the drive housing
- Fouling or coating over the anode surface
- Corroded, seized fixings when the anode is unbolted
🛠️ Service Notes
- The EVC generation is the selection detail - check what the installation runs before ordering, since the EVC2 kits carry different numbers
- Clean the mounting face back to bright metal so the anode is electrically connected, and leave it unpainted
- Triple and quad IPS installations need extra bonding cable 21200402 between the pods, one for a triple and two for a quad
- Requirements: a Volvo Penta IPS or an Aquamatic DPI, DPH, DPS, SX, OX, FWD or DPR sterndrive; Electronic Vessel Control generation C2 or later; a 2.5in, 4in or 7in EVC display or Glass Cockpit; and a fibreglass hull
- Twin Aquamatic sterndrive installations are supplied with two back-up anodes
- Extra bonding cable is needed between IPS units on triple and quad installations - one for a triple, two for a quad
- Volvo Penta recommends keeping shore power connected while berthed
- Below 75% battery state of charge with no shore power the system enters a monitor-only mode: status is still visible at the helm but protection comes from the back-up sacrificial anodes
- Below 50% battery state of charge the system is inactive and protection comes entirely from the back-up anodes
- Typical consumption is under 350 mA for a triple IPS1/10 installation with unpainted drives; with painted drives that can fall below 50 mA
- Always follow Volvo Penta's instructions for painting IPS drives, and the legislation governing antifouling paints where the boat is used
