🔌 Function
Provides sacrificial corrosion protection and the required electrical/mounting interface for the compatible ACP system.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Zinc material depleted below the service limit
- Heavy pitting or uneven anode erosion
- Loose, corroded or damaged mounting hardware
- ACP warning caused by poor anode connection
- Accelerated corrosion on underwater drive components
🛠️ Service Notes
- The replacement back-up anode for Volvo Penta Active Corrosion Protection on IPS2 / IPS20 installations. In normal running the ACP system provides the protection; this anode is what protects the drive when the system is not doing so.
- It is a zinc anode. Volvo Penta's general anode guidance now favours aluminium for salt and brackish water, but the ACP back-up anode is specified as zinc — fit what the ACP installation calls for.
- ACP steps down to monitor-only and then to inactive as battery state of charge falls, and protection falls to this anode at that point. It therefore has to be inspected and renewed on its own merits, even though a healthy ACP system consumes almost none of it.
- Clean bare-metal contact at the mounting is essential. Never paint the anode or its seating face.
- Check it at every haul-out alongside the ACP protection status shown at the helm; anode life is affected by water flow, salinity, temperature, pollution and stray current.
