Draws air through the radiator and coolers so the engine can shed its heat to the surrounding air.

- A blade cracked, chipped or with a section missing
- Vibration or a droning note that rises and falls with engine speed
- Blade tips catching or rubbing the shroud
- Hub bore or fixing holes elongated so the fan runs out of true

- Check the belt, tensioner and fan drive before condemning the fan itself, as a slipping drive gives the same overheating symptom
- A fan that has shed material runs out of balance, so inspect the pulley and its bearing at the same time
