🔌 Function

Converts the pistons' up-and-down motion into rotation, carrying the main and big-end journals and driving the timing gear, the flywheel and the front-end auxiliaries.

• A deep rumble or knock from the bottom end, heaviest under load
• Oil pressure low and slow to build once hot
• Metallic glitter or bearing material in the oil and filter
• Journals found scored, ovalised or blued on strip-down
• Cracking at a fillet radius, or endfloat well out of specification

• Measure the journals before ordering bearings - the shells must match the crankshaft's actual size and any regrind
• Renew the main and big-end shells, the rear seal and the thrust washers as a matter of course when the crank is out
• Find why the old crankshaft failed; poor oil supply or a distorted block will destroy the new one too
