  • Burnt smell, or the casing discoloured
  • Brushes, bearings or windings found worn or corroded on strip-down

  • Steering is safety related - do not put the vessel to sea with a suspect steering motor, and follow the maker's commissioning and bleeding procedure after fitting
  • Check the supply voltage, the fusing and the connections before condemning the motor
  • Confirm whether the installation takes the bare motor or a matched assembly
