🔌 Function

Provides the electromagnetic pull that moves its linkage when energised, engaging the starter drive so the engine can be cranked.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • A single click when the key is turned, with the engine not turning
  • Starter engaging weakly or not fully
  • Repeated clicking or chattering on a low battery
  • Corroded terminals with a high resistance measured across them
  • Burnt or welded contacts and a discoloured casing found on strip-down

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the battery, main leads and earths before condemning the solenoid - a voltage drop gives exactly these symptoms
  • Shim 241904 sets the pinion clearance in the same starting system and is measured on assembly
  • Starter solenoid 241898 is a different part covering the same engine families - order by number
