• Heavy knock from the bottom end that comes in with load
• Oil warning at idle, or pressure falling away when hot
• Bright metallic particles in the oil or trapped in the filter
• Bearing shells wiped, scored or picked up on removal
• Crankshaft journal ovality or taper found on measurement
