Carries the crankshaft at the even-numbered main journals, holding the shaft centred on pressurised oil under firing load.

- Low-frequency knock that comes in with throttle
- Oil pressure dropping at hot idle
- Metal particles in the oil or filter
- Shells wiped or the overlay gone on inspection
- Journal wear beyond the published limit on measurement
