🔌 Function

Returns oil drained from the turbocharger bearing housing back to the sump under gravity, so the bearing housing does not fill and force oil past its seals.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Blue smoke and oil found in the charge pipework
  • Oil weeping at the drain flange
  • Oil level dropping with no external leak
  • Pipe coked, restricted or kinked on strip-down
  • Turbocharger seals leaking although the shaft is sound

  • A blocked or restricted return pushes oil past the turbo seals - always check the pipe is clear before condemning a turbocharger
  • Renew the flange gaskets or o-rings at both ends
  • Keep the drain falling all the way down with no traps or tight kinks
