• Isolate the batteries before touching a terminal block, and label or photograph the connections so every cable goes back on the same stud
• Clean or renew the terminals and cable ends, dress the cables so nothing is pulling on a stud, and make sure no stray strand or washer can bridge between studs
• Tighten each terminal firmly, to the specified figure where one is given — a loose joint heats up and burns out, while an over-tightened stud strips or cracks the block
• Replace a block that is cracked, tracked, discoloured or charred rather than reusing it, and refit any insulating cover, boot or shield
• Protect the finished joints with the recommended electrical grease or spray, and confirm the repair by checking voltage drop under load rather than by eye
