- Fit the wire on its original route with the original clips, sleeving and grommets, so it is held clear of heat, sharp edges and moving parts and no strain sits on the terminals
- Replace a damaged wire rather than patching it — a taped repair in a boat's engine space takes up damp and comes back as an intermittent fault
- Make terminations off with the correct crimp for the size of wire and weatherproof the joint as the original was protected; do not pierce insulation to take a reading
- Check both ends are clean, dry and tight, and confirm the circuit works before closing up the access
