🔌 Function
Carries the drive's rotational power out to the propeller, running through the shaft seal and its supporting bearings to turn the propeller and generate thrust.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Vibration through the hull or drive that rises with shaft speed, often worst in a narrow band of revs
- A rumble, growl or knock from the shaft line, or a clear change in noise when gear is engaged
- The shaft seal weeping, or water where there should be none — a scored or corroded shaft surface will chew out a new seal
- Worn, twisted or stripped splines, play where the shaft should be supported, or a propeller that has started to slip or work loose
- Fishing line, rope or weed wrapped at the shaft, with the heat marking and seal damage that follows it
🛠️ Service Notes
- Inspect the splines, keyway, taper, threads and seal running surfaces before fitting — corrosion, scoring or damaged splines mean the shaft goes no further
- Renew the seals, O-rings and bearings that run on or seal against the shaft while it is out; the labour to go back in later costs far more than the parts
- Grease splines and mating faces lightly with the lubricant specified for your drive and wipe the excess away — do not pack a taper joint with grease
- Renew the lock nut, tab washer or split pin rather than reusing it, and tighten to the figure and procedure in the workshop manual for your engine or drive
- Check free rotation and alignment by hand after assembly, then check for run-out, vibration and leaks on a short trial run before normal service
