Closes the top of the cylinders, carrying the valve gear and forming the combustion chambers.

- Coolant loss with no external leak
- Combustion gas pressurising the cooling system
- Cracking between the valve seats or into a coolant passage
- Face out of flat, causing repeat gasket failure
- Compression loss between adjacent cylinders
