• An adjusting washer is a precision-thickness shim: the correct one is whichever thickness gives the dimension called for in the workshop manual, so it is chosen by measurement rather than by simply matching what came out
• Measure the washer itself with a micrometer before fitting — thickness is the whole function, and markings or part numbers are no substitute for a measured figure
• Do not reuse a washer that is dished, indented, scored or corroded; a shim that has been distorted under clamp load will not restore the original setting
• Clean the seat and the washer of oil, old sealant and burrs so the stack sits dead flat — a trapped burr is thicker than the tolerance you are shimming to
• Where washers are refitted rather than renewed, keep each one with the component and position it came from, and record the thickness used so the setting can be reproduced later
