🔧 Product Description

Genuine Volvo Penta anodes are made to sacrifice themselves in order to protect the drive and propeller from galvanic corrosion. Volvo Penta now recommends aluminium anodes in salt and brackish water instead of the zinc previously recommended for salt water, and is gradually phasing out and replacing most of its zinc anodes with aluminium ones. Aluminium anodes give 30% higher corrosion protection capacity, up to 20-40% longer life span in salt water compared with similarly sized zinc anodes, a lower environmental impact, and are the better choice for brackish water too. Magnesium is the material listed for fresh water. This is the aluminium anode listed for transom shield, 290, SP drives; Transom shield, 290, DP drives; Transom shield, DPH, DPR, DPI drives, supplied for salt and brackish water.

🚤 Compatibility

  • Engine Family: DPH, D, AD, TMD, TSK, DP, HS, SP, TAMD, KAD, KAMD
  • HP Range: 150-480 HP

⚙️ Key Features

  • Transom shield anode for 290 and SP single prop, 290 and DP duo prop, and DPH, DPR and DPI drives
  • Aluminium, for salt and brackish water
  • 0.240 kg
  • Supersedes 852835 and 3588745
  • Fresh water equivalent is magnesium anode 3588768
  • Quantity varies by assembly, most commonly one
  • Aluminium anode for Transom shield, 290, SP drives; Transom shield, 290, DP drives; Transom shield, DPH, DPR, DPI drives.
  • Listed for salt and brackish water.
  • Aluminium anodes give 30% higher corrosion protection capacity than a similarly sized zinc anode.
  • Up to 20-40% longer life span in salt water than a similarly sized zinc anode.
  • Lower environmental impact, and the better choice for brackish water as well as salt.
  • Aluminium anodes can be used for all types of hull material.
  • Volvo Penta anodes feature, where needed, an internal reinforcement made from an alloy that does not erode, which also ensures a reliable electrical connection between the anode and the drive.
  • Material: aluminium
  • Fits: Transom shield, 290, SP drives; Transom shield, 290, DP drives; Transom shield, DPH, DPR, DPI drives
  • Aluminium sacrificial anode for the transom shield position
  • Fits the Aquamatic single prop 290 and SP drives, the duo prop 290 and DP drives, and the DPH, DPR and DPI drives
  • Position: transom shield
  • Water type: Salt and brackish water
  • Fits: the Aquamatic single prop 290 and SP drives, the duo prop 290 and DP drives, and the DPH, DPR and DPI drives

🔌 Function

Sacrifices itself to galvanic corrosion so the transom shield and drive castings are protected.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Anode more than half wasted away
  • Anode showing no wastage at all, meaning it is not electrically connected
  • Chalky white deposits over the anode surface
  • Pitting or paint blistering starting on the drive castings
  • Anode loose on its fixing or the fixing corroded

🛠️ Service Notes

  • This is the aluminium anode for salt and brackish water - magnesium anode 3588768 is the fresh water version and must not be substituted
  • One of the numbers it replaces was catalogued as an anode kit, so check whether your list expects other items alongside the anode
  • Fit to clean bare metal and inspect at least every season, renewing at around half wastage rather than waiting
  • Salt and brackish water: aluminium (or, on some older drives, cadmium-free zinc marked Zn). Fresh water: magnesium.
  • When installing a new anode it is important to have good contact between the anode and the surface to which it is connected.
  • If an anode has been exposed to air for a long time it can be covered by a passivating surface film that prevents it working properly; consider reactivating it with emery paper before launching. Do not use sandpaper, a wire brush or other steel tools when cleaning, as these may damage the galvanic protection.
  • Water flow, salinity, temperature, pollution levels and stray current considerably affect anode life.
  • Read the operator's manual for detailed information on maintaining and replacing anodes.
  • Volvo Penta now recommends aluminium anodes in salt and brackish water, in place of the zinc previously recommended for salt water
  • Aluminium anodes are listed as giving 30% higher corrosion protection capacity and up to 20-40% longer life in salt water than similarly sized zinc anodes, with lower environmental impact, and as the better choice for brackish water too
  • Magnesium is the material listed for fresh water
  • For some older drives, cadmium-free zinc anodes, marked Zn, are supplied for salt and brackish water instead of aluminium
  • Volvo Penta anodes carry, where needed, an internal reinforcement in an alloy that does not erode, which also keeps a reliable electrical connection between the anode and the drive
  • An anode that has been exposed to air for a long time can be covered by a passivating surface film that stops it working properly; consider reactivating it with emery paper before launching the boat
  • Refer to the Operator's Manual for maintenance and replacement detail for your own product
