Turns the exhaust flow out of the engine towards the outlet and, on a wet system, brings the cooling water into the gas stream.

• Rusty water dripping or staining below the elbow joints
• Exhaust leak heard as a puffing or ticking that grows with load
• Internal waterways scaled up or corroded through into the gas side
• Water carrying back towards the engine when it should not
• Flange faces pitted so a new gasket still will not seal

• Renew the gaskets and the fixings when the elbow comes off, and check the flange faces for flatness
• If water has been getting into the gas side, check the cylinders and the turbocharger before running the engine again
• At nearly 23 kg this needs support while it is manoeuvred into place
