The strength required to steer a boat with a hydraulic steering system is inversely proportional to the number of turns of the wheel lock-to-lock. Wheel turns are determined by the ratio between the cylinder volume, the pump displacement and the free movement of the steering device. A large cylinder volume with a small pump displacement gives more wheel turns; a small cylinder volume with a large pump displacement gives fewer. Fewer wheel turns means quicker steering response but more effort; more wheel turns means slower response but less effort. Three steering cylinders are available, all for rudder installations, with volumes of 116 cm3, 168 cm3 and 215 cm3. This is the 215 cm3 cylinder: 682 kg output force, 228 mm stroke and 111 kgm torque, with three-eighths inch (9.5 mm) fittings for high pressure flexible hose.

• Loss of steering assistance or slow response at the wheel
• Fluid leaking at the rod seal or gland nuts
• Rod pitted or scored where it enters the seal
• Spongy helm from air in the circuit
• Steering that will not reach full lock evenly both ways
