- Coolant weeping or crusting along the plate edge
- Slow coolant loss with staining below the housing
- Plate corroded, pitted or eaten thin at the sealing face
- Gasket flattened, torn or hard on removal
- Fixings corroded into their threads

- Check the housing face for corrosion pitting, as a pitted face will keep weeping against a new plate
