- Air drawn into the system, giving hard starting or a hunting idle
- Sealing face corroded, scored or picked up
- Threads stripped or the centre bolt seized
- Cracks around a mounting hole or the inlet boss

- Renew the element and all the seals with the housing and bleed the system through before starting
- Check the whole suction side for air leaks; a housing that has been drawing air will have left the symptom behind after fitting
- Note fuel handling precautions — drain and catch the fuel rather than letting it run into the bilge
