🔌 Function

Uses stored hydraulic pressure to spin the flywheel and turn the engine over for starting, in place of an electric starter.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Slow or laboured cranking even with full system pressure
  • No cranking at all when the start valve is opened
  • Hydraulic fluid weeping from the shaft seal or body
  • Grinding or clattering as the drive engages the flywheel
  • Drive pinion staying engaged after the engine fires

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check accumulator pressure and the condition of the supply hoses before condemning the motor
  • Inspect the flywheel ring gear teeth while the motor is off, as damaged teeth will destroy a new pinion
  • Depressurise the hydraulic circuit before removal
