🔌 Function
Stores rotational energy to smooth the firing pulses and carries the starter ring gear and drive face.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Grinding or clashing on engagement from worn or broken ring gear teeth
- Starter spinning without turning the engine
- Vibration or a rumble that follows engine speed
- Drive or friction face scored, heat-cracked or blued
- Bolt holes worn, or the flywheel bolts found loose
🛠️ Service Notes
- At over 68 kg this needs a hoist or engine lift, not a manual lift - dropping it will injure someone
- Inspect the ring gear all the way round and check the crankshaft flange face before fitting
- Use new flywheel bolts where specified and torque in the correct sequence
