🔌 Function

Slides along the shaft to lock the selected gear to the drive, making and breaking the engagement when a gear is shifted.

  • Gear engagement slow, harsh or reluctant
  • Drive jumping out of gear under load
  • Clonk or graunch on shifting between ahead and astern
  • Engagement teeth or dogs found rounded, chipped or hooked
  • Metal debris on the magnetic plug or in the drive oil

  • Inspect the mating gear dogs and the shift mechanism at the same time - a rounded sleeve almost always has a rounded partner
  • Check the shift cable adjustment after fitting, since incomplete engagement is what rounds these teeth
  • Renew the drive oil and clean the magnetic plug before returning the drive to service
