Seals one of the core holes left in the casting when the sand core is withdrawn after casting, closing the passage behind it and keeping its fluid in.

• The plug visibly domed, dished or standing proud of its bore
• Corrosion pitting round the rim of the plug, or the plug found loose when it is tapped
