• Gear oil weeping down the gearcase or a milky oil sample
• Water in the drive oil found at a service drain
• Seal lip hardened, cracked or turned over
• Groove worn into the shaft where the lip runs

• Check the shaft or bore surface for a wear groove - a new seal on a grooved shaft leaks again quickly
