🔌 Function

Supports and locates the valve stem as it moves, holding the valve square to its seat and controlling oil past the stem.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Blue smoke at idle or on the overrun
• Oil consumption rising with no external leak
• Rattle or tick from the valve gear
• Stem rock felt when the valve is lifted in the guide
• Valve no longer seating evenly, showing on a compression test

🛠️ Service Notes

• Fitting a new guide is machine shop work - the guide must be sized and the seat recut to the new bore afterwards
• Renew valve stem seal 3853521 and check valve 3853485 at the same time; guide wear and stem seal wear go together
