🔌 Function

Engages the flywheel ring gear when the starter is energised and transmits the motor's torque to turn the engine over.

  • Harsh grinding or clattering as the starter engages
  • Starter spins up without turning the engine
  • Pinion teeth chipped, hooked or worn to a point
  • Pinion sticking on its shaft instead of returning cleanly
  • Occasional failure to engage that clears on a second attempt

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Inspect the flywheel ring gear before fitting - a damaged pinion usually means damaged ring gear teeth as well, and the new pinion will fail again if the ring gear is left
  • Clean and lightly lubricate the helical shaft with a grease rated for starters, and keep lubricant off the teeth
