Screens debris out of the oil drawn from the sump before it reaches the pump, protecting the pump and the bearings beyond it.

  • Low or slow-rising oil pressure, worst when the oil is hot
  • Rattle or clatter from the top end on start-up
  • Sludge or debris found packed into the mesh on removal
  • Mesh torn, crushed or partly detached from its frame
  • Oil pressure warning that comes and goes with engine attitude in a sea

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Clean or renew the strainer whenever the sump is off, and find out where the debris came from before rebuilding
  • Check the pick-up joint and any gasket at the strainer flange, since air drawn in there loses pressure just as a blocked mesh does
