  • Water in the lubricant, or oil leaking out at the seal
  • Milky or emulsified lubricant on the dipstick or drain
  • Lip hardened, split or turned back
  • Grooving worn into the shaft where the lip runs
  • Spring lost or displaced from behind the lip

  • Inspect the shaft where the lip runs — a grooved shaft will cut a new seal within hours
  • Fit square, lubricate the lip and press to the correct depth
