🔌 Function

Steps battery voltage up to the tens of thousands of volts needed to jump the plug gap, storing energy in its primary winding and releasing it when the circuit is broken.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • No spark, or spark lost once the engine has warmed up
  • Misfire under load or at higher engine speeds
  • Hard starting, or the engine cutting out then restarting when cool
  • Coil body cracked, swollen or leaking, or smelling hot
  • Tracking marks or arcing around the high-tension tower

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Check the coil feed, earth and the trigger circuit before condemning the coil - a bad earth mimics a failed coil
  • Ignition module 3858984 and cooling plate 3858985 are the switching side of the ignition on other engines in this range
  • High-tension ignition carries a serious shock risk - isolate the battery before working on it
