3860240 Gear Housing | Genuine Volvo Penta Part

🔧 Product Description

Genuine Volvo Penta gear housing for the 1.59:1 ratio, from the Marine Propulsion group, weighing 80 kg and listed for one DPX application. The ratio is the whole point of the order: 3860242 is the same housing for the 1.78:1 ratio at 83.5 kg, and at 3.5 kg apart on an 80 kg casting the weights are no way to tell them apart.

🚤 Compatibility

Typically suits:

• Volvo Penta DPX-A

• Engine Family: DPX

⚙️ Key Features

• For the 1.59:1 ratio
• 80 kg
• One published DPX application
• 1.78:1 alternative is gear housing 3860242

🔌 Function

Carries the drive's gear set, bearings and shafts in one casting, setting the 1.59:1 reduction between the input shaft and the propeller shaft.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Whine or growl that changes with load or gear selected
• Water in the drive oil, or oil weeping from the housing joints
• Corrosion blistering and paint lifting on the casting
• Play felt at the propeller shaft, or a knock on gear engagement
• Metal glitter or bright flakes on the drain plug magnet

🛠️ Service Notes

• The ratio must match the other half of the drive and the propeller selection — confirm 1.59:1 against your build before ordering
• At 80 kg this is a freight item needing lifting gear, not a hand carry
• Renew the seals, gaskets and the graded shims when the housing is changed and set the backlash to specification
