- Starter grinding, whining or failing to engage
- Ring gear teeth chipped, hooked or missing
- Vibration that appears after a drive or coupling change
- Coupling or friction face scored, blued or cracked
- Bolt holes worn or the flange run-out out of specification
🛠️ Service Notes
- Check the crankshaft flange and the starter pinion before fitting — a worn pinion will chew a new ring gear
- Use new flywheel bolts and tighten to the figure and sequence in the workshop manual
- At nearly 14 kg, plan the lift and the freight
