🔌 Function

Seals the combustion gases above the piston, controls the oil film on the bore and carries heat into the cylinder wall.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Blue smoke from the exhaust and rising oil consumption
  • Loss of compression, worst when the engine is warm
  • Crankcase pressure blowing back through the breather
  • Ring grooves carboned up, or rings stuck in their grooves
  • Bore glazed, scored or with a wear ridge at the top

  • Standard size only — measure the bore first, because a rebored cylinder needs the matching oversize kit
  • Check the ring end gaps in the bore and the groove clearance before assembly
  • Hone or deglaze the bore as the workshop manual directs so the new rings bed in
