🔌 Function

Closes the top of the cylinders and carries the valves, ports and combustion chambers, sealing compression and taking coolant through its passages.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Coolant loss with no external leak, or steam and sweet smell from the exhaust
  • White deposits or coolant in the oil and a mayonnaise emulsion on the filler cap
  • Overheating and pressurised header tank or hoses
  • Misfire on one cylinder from a burnt valve or cracked seat
  • Face found distorted, cracked or corroded on strip-down

  • Always fit a new head gasket and new head bolts or studs where they are specified single-use, and tighten in the published sequence and stages
  • Have the block face checked for flatness and find the cause of the overheat before refitting
